Food is an easy way to improve brain function because you can build up the nutrients and chemicals needed for your brain to operate at maximum efficiency while also enhancing your overall health. Have you ever noticed if you skip a meal or two you have difficulty concentrating, or perhaps you become a little irritable? That’s your brain telling you it needs a new supply of nutrition to operate properly.

Essential fatty acids– many people are led to believe that dietary fats are bad. However certain fats obtained from foods are critical for optimal brain health. Your brain cells depend on fats for construction, repair, and ongoing communication.

Unsaturated fats are those that must be obtained from diet because the body cannot create them. Among the most important of these are unsaturated omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids are plentiful in the typical American diet, it’s the omega-3 fatty acids that are less plentiful in our diet.

Water – water is required for survival 70 % of your brain is water. Each of us needs to drink plenty of water to maintain proper brain function. If you don’t consume enough water every day you will become dehydrated. When your brain becomes dehydrated, it is harder for your brain to make connections and recall information. You will easily become confused and disoriented. Stay hydrated if you expect your brain to keep working at its best.

Antioxidants and free radicalsOxidative damage caused by free radicals is responsible for much of the aging of our brain and other parts of our body. Free radicals damage various parts of our cells. The body’s defenses for neutralizing these free radicals are antioxidants. Antioxidants are molecules of various sizes and shapes that protect the brain and the body from free radicals and oxidative damage.

1. Blueberries – The levels of antioxidants found in blueberries help slow down oxidation of the brain. Not only do these chemicals help reduce the risk of mental diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as some cancers, they also can result in increased memory and motor skill function.

2. Black Currants – Black currants not only help protect brain cells, they are also jammed packed with antioxidants. They protect the cells found in hippocampus, a part of the brain which helps usher in information to be remembered and stored in other parts of the brain. The darker the color, the more rich in antioxidants they are.

3. Cherries – Jam-packed with antioxidants, cherries not only taste good, they are good brain food. Antioxidants help to fight off free radicals, thereby helping blood flow easier to the brain. Without the free radicals, not only does more blood make it to the brain, but the blood is more nutrient-dense.

4. Eggplant – Eggplant helps to protect the lipids in brain cell membranes. These lipids help to keep some of the bad stuff out, like free radicals, while also keeping the good stuff in.

5. Vegetables – the more colorful the vegetables on your plate, the better they are for you. Think about various colored lettuce, spinach, onions, bell peppers, I could go on and on. The more colorful the vegetable the better.

6. Salads- are refreshing ways to consume plenty of colorful vegetables, add a few almonds or walnuts or sunflower seeds. Salads are a healthy addition to the brain diet.

7. Fresh fruit-try adding fruit to your meals or as a snack between meals; strawberries and blueberries and other berries, oranges, tangerines, Apples, pears, melons, peaches, or mangoes can make refreshing and healthy desserts and snacks. Start using fruit in place of pastries and cookies for dessert your memory and your waistline will thank you.

8. Nuts and seeds – nuts and seeds are not only healthy but you can eat them as snacks add them to your salad or vegetable dish. Almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are good brain healthy choices try to limit these to a small handful a day, due to their high calorie content.

Negative Emotions

Negative emotion can creep up on you like an engulfing flame. When your about to do something you love or your about to start a new project your passionate about, negative emotions can really be the stumbling block that makes what your about to do now harder and more difficult than ever. I defiantly know this to be true for me. When I am about to do something that I know is going to bring me closer to my goals there is always that monster in my head saying things like you failed at this before you weren’t well received before so why are you going to put yourself in that predicament now? Well I am here to tell you that freeing yourself from negative emotions isn’t easy. You can’t shake those emotions off like a leaf on your shoulder.What you have to try your best to do is start small. Feel the negative emotion but still move forward towards your goal.For example if you are planing to write a book and you are saying to yourself but so and so has a book how can I top that? Stop and say the truth which is God made us all and if we are uniquely made my project is defiantly going to b different but none is better or worse. However just saying this isn’t enough you have to say it and move it. Meaning even though you are experiencing the negative emotion you have to act in the opposite of that fear. Follow your dreams anyways, fight those thoughts with actions that overrides all negative emotion. SO JOIN ME AS I SPEAK NO NEGATIVITY HEAR NO NEGATIVITY AND PAY NO MIND TO NEGATIVITY

The Sacral Chakra

Sacral Chakra re-alignment, otherwise known as Svadhisthana.   Located in the sacrum, your Sacral Chakra corresponds to the proper functioning of your sexual organs, and thus your hormones and reproductive cycles. A healthy Swadhisthana opens us up to the development of our creativity, our passion, our joy, and enthusiasm. Given its location, our Sacral Chakra pumps all our energy from our base of our spine to our brains, keeping it young, vibrant, and nourished. Given that function, it’s directly related to our sexual energy and virility. That makes total sense: an open sacral chakra simply means you are able to feel, whether emotionally or physically. It allows us to emotionally and physically connect with others, and generally be open to the world, to manifest our desires, and to ‘let go’.

Chakracise your sacral chakra with pelvic thrustsand circular pelvis movements.  Wide-Angle Seated Forward Bend releases the inner groins and flows blood properly throughout the pelvic region according to B.K.S. Lyengar, author of “Light on Yoga.” I have heard that belly dancing is probably the best physical activity to open up your sacral chakra. Given the pelvic and hip awareness it requires, dancing (and belly dancing in particular) is especially suited to creating emotional and physical awareness of the sacral chakra, our sensuality, femininity, and sexuality. In fact, belly dance was initially practiced for the very purpose of helping women prepare for child birth, it was almost a coming of age ritual allowing young women to discover, love, and appreciate their bodies.  According to the Yoga Journalwebsite, asanas or postures that open the hip and inner groins help to balance the sacral chakra.  Bound Angle is a yoga posture that stretches the inner groins and stimulates the pelvis and abdomen with a fresh blood supply.

Feelings of guilt, addiction, a lack of self-confidence or sexual energy, and control issues may all be signs of a closed off sacral chakra. Specific physical dysfunctions might include lower back pain, sexual dysfunction, or urinary problems. On the flip-side, if you are over-active, overly emotional, or have control issues your sacral chakra might be on overdrive and you may want to tone it down a little!

The Root Chakra

Today, I’m starting with the base of it all, the Root Chakra or Muladharain Sanskrit.

Located at the base of the spine, the Root Chakra serves as the solid foundation of our whole energy system. It links us to the physical world, it keeps us grounded. When it is balanced, it allows us to bring solidarity and support to those around us. It allows us to feel grounded, secure, empowered, centered, and have high self-esteem. In doing so, it gives us physical energy, controls our fears, and maintains our overall health. This chakra stores all our learned or inherited beliefs, our survival instincts, our feelings of security and primal urges.

Any physical activity helps us keep our Root Chakra open. If you’re a Yoga practitioner, Hatha Yoga and warrior poses that keep us firmly grounded and balanced are key to opening your Root Chakra. Any other ‘grounding’ type activity might help, for some it might be something as mundane as cooking or cleaning, for others, going outside and taking a walk.

If you’re feeling lost, alienated, lacking energy, insecure, or feel like you don’t have purpose, you’re root chakra might be out of balance. Physically, imbalance can be noted by lower back pain, anemia. depression, and immune system issues among other symptoms. An overly strong Root Chakra is noted if you are particularly egoistic, domineering, greedy, and/or overly judgmental.
