Carnelian (also spelled cornelian) is a brownish-red mineral which is commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone. Similar to carnelian is sard, which is generally harder and darker. (The difference is not rigidly defined, and the two names are often used interchangeably.)  Both carnelian and sard are varieties of the silica mineral chalcedony colored by impurities of iron oxide. The color can vary greatly, ranging from pale orange to an intense almost-black coloration.

The bow drill was used to drill holes into carnelian in Mehrgarh between 4th-5th millennium BC. Carnelian was recovered from Bronze Age Minoan layers at Knossos on Crete in a form that demonstrated its use in decorative arts;[3] this use dates to approximately 1800 BC. Carnelian was used widely during Roman times to make engraved gems for signet or seal rings for imprinting a seal with wax on correspondence or other important documents. Hot wax does not stick to carnelian. Sard was used for Assyrian cylinder seals, Egyptian and Phoenician scarabs, and early Greek and Etruscan gems. The Hebrew odem (translated sardius), the first stone in the High Priest’s breastplate, was a red stone, probably sard but perhaps red jasper.

Carnelian (also sometimes referred to as cornelian) is found primarily in India, as well as various sites in South America. It is a variety of chalcedony. The most favorable pieces are a deep red to red-orange hue. Carnelian has a long and storied past, and was once considered strictly the property of the noble class. People holding a high social status were often buried with this gem stone.

Ancient Egyptians carried it on and about their bodies as a source of constant renewal and vitality. It was also told in the Egyptian Book of the Deadto be placed in tombs as “magic armor” for life after death.

A Carnelian in the form of the “tjet,” symbol of Mother Isis, was placed on the neck of a mummy to ensure the protection, safe passage, and rebirth of the spirit in the afterlife.

Another Carnelian amulet was the Eye of Horus, which is still believed to offer protection against the evil eye.

Carnelian is an energy booster. It helps the insecure person to find strength within them so they can come into their own. It is said to increase the appetite.

In Renaissance magic, the carnelian was usually engraved with a sword or images of warriors. Then this as a magical amulet was place in the home to guard it from lighting and storms or carried as protection against enchantment.

Carnelian is a great grounding stone and helping one to be more present in their life. This, of course, can make it much easier to help you find direction within your life. Carnelian helps you to feel in control of life.

Magickal uses of Carnelian include using it as a focus for past life work and for finding a “twin soul” or family.

In Roman times, Carnelian was engraved with the head of a lion or a great leader.

Is Mercury Good or Bad For The Body?

What’s Wrong With Mercury?

Substantial levels of mercury in the human body have been proven to cause several adverse results, such as a decline of the central nervous system, memory, major depression and tremors and drastic energy problems. During a root canal or instance, mercury is absorbed equally into the blood stream, connective tissues and the nervous system, generating a disastrous effect. Mercury’s effect on the body over time can constrain the individual cells and respiratory enzymes, and this stops your cells from utilizing oxygen. Mercury can cause heart disease and shut down your immune system in certain cases. There is a solution and its cleansing your body of mercury as soon as you’re ready to.

Mercury detoxification is the procedure of removing toxic mercury out from the entire body. The procedure is in some cases long, typically taking about three months to around six months. There are two common of strategies to remove mercury from the body. The two known methods are: Intravenous and Chelation. The intravenous approach is more pricey and less convenient, as a result the oral method, also known as Chelation is more preferred.

An interesting area of alternative medicine that is advancing rapidly is mercury detox treatment. Mercury is poisonous to mankind. Contrary to what you may have heard about mercury poisoning, You can be exposed to mercury in a number of ways, including the silver fillings in our teeth, ammunition, artificial flowers and wood preservatives. The most common method for eradicating mercury is chelation therapy. Chelation therapy is introducing a binding agent into the body that grabs onto the mercury and causes it to be excreted with the body’s waste products.

Even though the intravenous approach administers compounds straight into the blood stream, oral chelators can be used to minimize mercury amounts in the body. These will generally consist certain types of algae, cilantro, all-natural chelators, well-known for their capacity to collect and bind mercury, along with additional nutritional supplements to aid the body in doing away with mercury.

If you think you have mercury in your body, be certain to verify with an overall health professional on how best to remove the chemical from your body. The moment you eliminate the mercury from your body, you can expect to feel improved brain strength, increased attentiveness, greater vigor too!

Picking Yourself Up When You Feel Like You’ve Never Been Lower

I Got Major Depressive Disorder
I Got Major Depressive Disorder (Photo credit: 囧-Jean-囧)

In the year 2007 the world was thrown into a global economic crisis, the like of which had not been experienced in many living people’s memories. Credit crisis turned to global economic uncertainty, which in turn led to the insecurity of businesses and extreme job insecurity. Many were hit hard with the reality that they were losing their jobs. The loss of a job is a soul destroying event in anyone’s life. It can throw people into a deep place of depression and feeling of worthlessness. Taking away someone’s ability to provide for his or her family, particularly if the person is a man, husband and father, is something pretty hard to describe or quantify particularly to someone who has not gone through the experience first hand.

The feeling of depression can of course vary from person to person; some people are naturally more predisposed to feelings of depression and sadness while others can have a lot thrown at them before depression takes a proper hold. The human being is conditioned largely by society to hide feelings from peers and families but be under no illusion: Stress and depression are mental illnesses and nothing about which to be ashamed. In fact the realisation and admission that there is a problem can often be a massive step on the road to recovery. They can be fought and overcome and there is (usually) an answer or solution. If the stress is to do with losing one’s income and employment then clearly securing new employment is the answer. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Depression.jpg

The best possible way in which to combat this feeling of helplessness is not to allow the depression to envelope you but to fight. Choose your mindset, decide what you want to achieve and by when and most crucially how. So how do you motivate yourself to get back up and out to find a new job?

Well being of the mind

The largest tool you have available at your disposal is your mind. Using your mind to keep you mentally healthy can be a massive string to your bow in the fight against stress and depression. By training your mind to be positive instead of negative you give yourself to best possible start in your bid to motivate and inspire yourself. Only someone who believes in himself will persuade others to do the same. By using your mind maybe you can retrain to be qualified to carry out a different job role and in effect wipe the slate clean and psychologically start over.

Support Network

As with anyone trying to help a loved one to fight hard times in life, such as bereavement or drug or alcohol addictions – Find treatment for an alcoholic, the support of the people around you is utterly paramount in times of stress.

Having a spouse who understands and supports you rather than belittles and makes the situation worse for you is a vital in overcoming the barriers. Surround yourself with positive people; support groups are a great way in which to find help. Cut out the people in your life who do not help your situation. This might seem an extreme measure, but it is an important one, and does not have to be permanent. You need to look to your surrounding world for their support and understanding and be ruthless in the type of support you are looking for.

Talking and voicing concerns is a great therapy. As already mentioned, admitting you have sad feelings and what the root of the problem is a vital step and building on this with honesty and collaboration with friends and family makes you stronger.

Visualisation is a valuable trick too. Take a second to think how it will feel to achieve your goal, how it feels to have a job again, it makes you feel like a winner. So make your subconscious mind understand that feeling of winning, the yearning to win and you will actually begin to realise these feelings in real life, and SUCCEED.

Write down small goals, week by week write a plan of what you plan to achieve and maybe share them with a friend or spouse so they can help keep you focussed on the week ahead. When you achieve them: reward yourself and celebrate them by talking to people and telling them. They will be as pleased for you as you are and you will be ready for the next challenge.

Exercise and Diet

Enjoying a well-balanced and nutritious diet is a weapon against stress and depression. By fuelling your body with a balance of protein, carbohydrate, fruit and vegetables with varied color ranges you will improve your state of mind immediately. When you go to the grocery store plan your meals and ensure they represent all food groups.

 http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GntVegCart.jpg

Reduce your alcohol, caffeine and cigarettes too, although you feel you need them more than ever when you are stressed they will become a crutch which you will find it hard to break away from, so visualize not turning to them for support, maybe do some exercise instead. Exercise provides an outlet to release your feelings and channel them to good use. Plan some form of exercise on a daily basis. It doesn’t have to be at the gym. Walking is fantastic exercise, gets you out into the fresh air and is free. Build up to a jog and before you know it you could be running through your stress and working it out of your body.

Motivating yourself to get out of a situation is not an easy challenge. Only you are able to do it though, no one else is going to give you your goal, there is only one person that can affect it and achieve it, (with support) and when you do so, be proud!

How to Keep Up The Loving: Creative Ideas For Your Long- Distance Relationship

Long Distance Relationships
Long Distance Relationships (Photo credit: valordictus)

Engaging in a long-distance relationship can be quite difficult! To keep things new and intriguing, take time to send special messages to your beloved on a frequent basis.

Use popular messenger services like Facebook, Yahoo, Skype, etc. to keep your love life jumping, although especially since its long distance. The added benefit of using these instant message services is that you two will each have some privacy and can reinforce the depth of your communication this way. It’s a good bet to instant messaging as often as you both can!

Get really creative by writing a letter or finding a picture of something you have shared together. Paste the letter or picture to a piece of cardboard and then cut it into several puzzle pieces. Send your long distance love a few pieces every other day in the mail and once they have completed the puzzle send some roses in celebration of their accomplishment!

You can also send a package with a cd of passionate songs you two enjoy from an earlier time you were together. Send out something sweet like fruit or candy too, and if they enjoy stuffed animals you should send that as well. Tell them how much they’re missed and how you imagine them continuously. There is really no way to mess this up unless you if you just do nothing. Otherwise, almost anything you can come up with is a fantastic way to let your love know you’re thinking about them regardless of the distance between the two of you.

Another idea is to have someone take photos of you and produce a hand crafted calendar, sounds simple enough right? Well it certainly is! Get into to the spirit of it, create a master piece and they’ll love it! Grab some card-stock paper and glue a decorative border on each side. Print a copy of it on the printer and increase the size of the pictures, then paste them to the paper. Next print out boxes on the computer for the days and decorate each day,  month or week. Finally place your creation  together with a nice ribbon and send it to your mate with love. Your loved one will love your hard work!

Alternately you can send your sweetheart some letters adorned with your favorite scent. Cut old clothing and soak pieces of the fabric with your scent and include those in the package and the smell will last even longer.

Nobody wants to miss an important occasion with their loved one. Who says you have to? There are ways to share the magical times together in spite of whatever distances between the two of you. If you can’t be together to share a special moment, simply send your long distance lover take out by ordering from a restaurant where your mate  lives and have dinner delivered to them. Make sure you order your love’s favorite meal. Then use your webcams to enjoy dinner together.

Instead of sending your love a hand-written letter, hand deliver a personalized cd with your special message on it, and share details of your thoughts for them when you next meet. They can listen to the tape when the two of you can’t talk by phone or computer when they want to hear your voice.
Delight your mate by arranging for a delivery of their favorite flowers! Include a handwritten card professing your love for your lover. They’ll be so warm and mushy inside from your thoughtfulness.

Style and design a website in your lovers honor. Devote the site to your sweet romance and incorporate quotes, poetry, affirmations  and thoughts, photographs, romantic messages, also add the history of how you two met, and any other information to bring  a smile to their face.

Your partner would enjoy a virtual greeting card from you one day too, try it. Grab their email address and send them straight to their inbox as often as you’d like.

Collect a record of all of your emails over your relationship. As soon as  you have accumulated at least a year of emails print them all out and separate them by topic, month or day.

Last, make a front page that connects all the sweet things that you’ve enjoyed together. Include a collage of pictures, too. Take your print to a printer shop to have the pages binded into a real book! Make sure to give your ‘book of distance love’ a title, like “Love is Sweet” include the perfect book title on the cover. You’ll be glad you took the extra time. Your love can last throughout time now that it’s in a book. Enjoy your love life no matter what.

Is Learning the Key to Life-Long Satisfaction?

Do you subscribe to ‘word of the day’ emails? Have you ever taken a pottery, computer, or foreign language class? Most of us have because we are curious about the world and enjoy learning new tasks.

Often, taking up a new hobby is on our yearly list of resolutions or an item on our “bucket lists” and takes a place among the things we want to do before we pass from this world.

Though consciously we undertake these challenges because we enjoy them, these choices may also reflect subconscious desires.

Community

If you’re taking classes within your community, the course is probably an expression of your desire to connect with other individuals with whom you share common ground. You live in the same place and have similar interests, so you are likely to make lasting friendships. The more friendships are formed, the more close-knit a community becomes. It also combats isolation, which is particularly common for older people who, through bereavement or retirement, mix less with members of the community than they used to.

Adult learning is usually hosted by a local educational institution or publicly funded service for good reasons. First, offering adult learning demonstrates a school’s acknowledgement that learning is meant to be a life-long activity. Likewise, the supportive grants they receive from the government indicate a commitment to encouraging a sense of community and the betterment of its residents.

This makes a nice circle of altruism, because it turns out that a need for self-improvement can actually be interpreted as being quite selfless.  Studies have shown that self-improvement courses lead to stronger community leadership.  Adult learning fosters a sense of empowerment, which can raise confidence and breed leadership. This leadership in turn translates to taking a strong role in a community, and an ability to stand up and have a voice when it is required.

Take, for instance, the example of a large multi-national conglomerate is building a new supermarket on an abandoned site at the edge of a medium-sized town. While the building would be improving that particular empty square of land, perhaps, it would endanger smaller, locally-run establishments that have been operating for decades and passed down from generation to generation. There need to be leaders in this community, perhaps to produce flyers, spread information via the Internet, or to stand up at a town meeting and speak for the people of that community.

Adult learning makes us better neighbors and parents and, above all, happier people.

Gaining Skills for a Better Future

We learn from an early age that we need education to get us further in life. One of the most valuable gifts teachers of children can give is a love of learning. Their task is a difficult one at times, but luckily for teachers and parents, human bodies have an innate system of learning appreciation.

When we learn, i.e. gain new information or are able to perform a new skill, the please centers of our brains react. Endorphins are released by the nervous system, which we interpret as being happy or content. The release is a subtle one, perhaps as much as eating a piece of chocolate or kissing a loved one or perhaps even less than that, but it is there. Once the new information is assimilated into what we know and become old information, the mind needs new information. Education scholar K. Patricia Cross said: “Learning is not so much an additive process, with new learning simply piling up on top of existing knowledge, as it is an active, dynamic process in which the connections are constantly changing and the structure reformatted.” When our brains are not being changed and reformatted, as stated by Cross, then we need a new piece of information to stimulate our endorphins. In this respect, we are all information junkies to some extent, using learning to make us more happier bit by bit.

Learning a foreign language over years may help a person to eventually take that trip around the world that she/he has been dreaming of, and perhaps joyfully send parcels to USA friends back home. Over time learning may also encourage someone to seek out new forms of employment, leading to overall improvement in our lives. Thus, we should feel proud of ourselves for taking on a new course, no matter what period in our lives we do it. The benefits of our labor will be felt for a long time.

Balancing The Inner And Outer Bodies

Holistic health, body, mind, heart, soul
Holistic health, body, mind, heart, soul (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

With the year 2012 in full swing you’re sure to feel some changes within you. More than ever people are making life changing decisions. The reason for the take -action -now- movement  is probably because 2012 is the year of the Dragon the year of expansion, change and inner transformation. You may have seen dragons at work in movies but not this lifetime. From what you can see on film from you comfortable seat in front of the movie or tv screen, I’m sure you’ll agree that dragons are dynamic in their movement. So being that this is the year of the dragon in chinese astrology anyway, this year is fast-moving and full of fire.

Most people are experiencing changes both within themselves, also in their environments too. Last year was the year of the rabbit. Reflect back to last year to see what the energy was last year. Compare the energy of last year to this year. Quite honestly last year was a year that was just right for meditation and personal transformation work. This year one has to work a bit harder to stay on point with their inner work. But with all this fiery movement going on around us, how can you stay on your inner grind?

Triumph of tapping the inner you takes place by adhering to a plan. What is this plan? The plan is one that you create with your goals and future in mind. If you want to conquer your dreams you have to work for it. How will you keep your mind from drifting while you’re working? You should give the body exactly what it wants. In this way the body gets to drift and relax (go into the zone)

People are feeling a bit ‘out of their body’. You may have had revelations about your past or future in ways that you can’t seem to put into words now. Well you should certainly look into meditation, deep breathing and some form of life force cultivation exercise too. A couple of life force cultivation exercise types are Tai Qi, Qi Gong, Yoga, and Martial Arts too. I you took just a small part of your day to schedule a special time just to do inner work for your body, spirit and mind, you will give yourself the best of both worlds. Once you finish your schedule in the evening or morning then head off to work, then you would have taken care of the inside stuff before tending to your external duties. This way you feel complete and fulfilled regardless of what comes to your mind while you’re working. The fact that you have bills pay means that you cannot go too deep into the mental zone without possibly getting yourself into trouble because of not being present at work. The boss would certainly not agree with you coming into work to do meditations and day dreaming about your life or even better ‘what’s life on Mars like’.

So you see how just a few minutes a day can take you into a more peaceful place but only by using your desire to be balanced then planning your time to accommodate your mission. The benefits of adding a relaxing daily regimen are almost unlimited in how they will give back to you. You have to take the first step and be honest with yourself. Look at your life in all its colors, textures then  listen to the feed back of your heart. What should you do differently to get to the next day with more peace and more answers to the discovery of who you are? It’s not enough to simply plan, with planning next comes action. Lay out exactly what you will use during your inner work. Do you need meditation music, a yoga mat, special clothing, shoes etc.

Whatever you need to be ready to relax, its most important to have those things ready as soon as you spring from your bed or walk into the door. Repetition is the key to conquering your dreams. Once you do your routine for at least 21 days, your new regimen will be a habit to your body. After 21 days you will feel the difference when you do your routine. In fact ,when you get up or come home you will notice that you almost mechanically jump right into action without any opposing thoughts from your mind. Enjoy your healing work. Relax. Balance is your birth right!

Carnitine : The amino acid that reduces the health risks posed by poor fat metabolism associated with diabetes; inhibits alcohol-induced fatty liver; and lessens the risk of heart disorders.

Carnitine is really not an amino acid, but because it is structurally similar to amino acids, it is normally classed with amino acids, and is also known as vitamin T. Carnitine is used in energy supply within cells and muscles and assists in preventing fatty build-up in areas such as the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles.

Unlike true amino acids, carnitine is not used for protein synthesis or as a neurotransmitter. Its main function in the body is to help transport long-chain fatty acids, which are burned within the cells, mainly in the mitochondria, to provide energy. This is a major source of energy for the muscles. Carnitine thus increases the use of fat as an energy source. This prevents fatty buildup, especially in the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles. Carnitine may be useful in treating chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), because a disturbance in the function of the mitochondria (the site of energy production within the cells) may be a factor in fatigue. Studies have shown decreased carnitine levels in many people with CFS.

Carnitine can be manufactured by the body if sufficient amounts of iron, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and the amino acids lysine and methionine are available. The synthesis of carnitine also depends on the presence of adequate levels of vitamin C. Inadequate intake of any of these nutrients can result in a carnitine deficiency. Carnitine can also be obtained from food, primarily meats and other foods of animal origin.

Function and Benefits of Carnitine

  • Carnitine is available as D-carnitine, L-carnitine, DL-carnitine as well as acetyl-L-carnitine, but L-carnitine is the most popular type.
  • L-Carnitine is synthesized from the essential amino acids lysine and methionine, but enough vitamin B1 (thiamine) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) must be available
  • Carnitine has also been shown to improve the antioxidant effect of vitamin C and vitamin E
  • Carnitine can be manufactured by the body if iron, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and the amino acids lysine and methionine are available
  • Insufficient carnitine will not allow fatty acids to be moved to the right place and the body will eventually wear down, resulting in a person feeling drained and tired
  • Carnitine reduces the health risks posed by poor fat metabolism associated with diabetes; inhibits alcohol-induced fatty liver; and lessens the risk of heart disorders.
  • Studies have shown that damage to the heart from cardiac surgery can be reduced by treatment with carnitine. According to The American Journal of Cardiology, one study showed that proprionyl-L-carnitine, a carnitine derivative, helps to ease the severe pain of intermittent claudication, a condition in which a blocked artery in the thigh decreases the supply of blood and oxygen to leg muscles, causing pain, especially with physical activity.
  • Carnitine has the ability to lower blood triglyceride levels, aid in weight loss, improve the motility of sperm, and improve muscle strength in people with neuromuscular disorders.
  • Men normally require more carnitine than women, because of their heavier body mass
  • Related to B-Vitamins

Deficiency Symptoms of Carnitine

Many cases of carnitine deficiency have been identified as partly genetic in origin, resulting from an inherited defect in carnitine synthesis. Possible symptoms of deficiency include confusion, heart pain, muscle weakness, and obesity.

Rich Food Sources of Carnitine

  • The highest concentrations of carnitine are found in red meat and dairy products.
  • Other natural sources of carnitine include nuts and seeds (e.g. pumpkin, sunflower, sesame), legumes or pulses (beans, peas, lentils, peanuts), vegetables (artichokes, asparagus, beet greens, broccoli, brussels sprouts, collard greens, garlic, mustard greens, okra, parsley, kale), fruits (apricots, bananas), cereals (buckwheat, corn, millet, oatmeal, rice bran, rye, whole wheat, wheat bran, wheat germ) and other “health” foods (bee pollen, brewer’s yeast, carob).

2012 Food for Thought: On Rising Up~

Can you be real if you can’t keep it real with yourself? Can you truly love another until you understand what love is? How many times have you experienced or been the victim of someone telling you lies? How did you feel afterwards? No matter what you can heal from anything if you choose to.

In this world someone has to stand up and be an example of just what love is. If its not you then who will do it. Why should you do it? Because we need you so the rest of the planet will heal. As you and i look around there is danger, hate, ignorance, disrespect, toxins everywhere. But amiss all that, we still live. Its amazing that we still grow and love one another even more by the day. There is nothing to be afraid of in the world. What you attract are your own fears. You can be the best yet this very year if you want to you most certainly can and will do it this very lifetime too. I know someone has hurt you before, by telling you lies, ignoring you and feeding you bullish..but there’s always a bright side to life. Feel the natural magic inside you. You are that indescribable beauty that you see in all the great people that have ever walked the earth. Go forth today and shine brighter than  you ever thought you could. Life is here for you to be an example for someone out there. Make it good! Don’t fall back to the past. You can make this a great life no matter what. If our world is to get better over all. Someone has to make a change. If not you then who will? Bliss to you this glorious 2012.

Citrulline: The amino acid use for the detoxification of ammonia, a byproduct of protein breakdown, and in the treatment of fatigue.

Citrulline is a nonessential amino acid, which means that it is manufactured from other amino acids in the liver; it does not have to be obtained directly through the diet. Citrulline is found in high concentration in the liver. Citrulline is not a component of any major proteins or enzymes.  It is synthesized in the body from ornithine by the addition of CO2 and ammonia and is a precursor of arginine. Only the L form of amino acids are constituents of protein.

Citrulline exists primarily in the liver, where it is heavily involved in the urea cycle to detoxify and excrete ammonia. This unusual amino acid is formed in the urea cycle by the addition of carbon dioxide and ammonia to ornithine. Next, it is combined with aspartic acid to form arginosuccinic acid, which later is metabolized into the amino acid arginine. Citrulline is not a component of any major proteins or enzymes.

Function and Benefits of Citrulline

  • Promotes energy
  • Stimulates the Immune system
  • Metabolized to form L-Arginine
  • Detoxifies ammonia
  • Citrulline helps the immune system in fighting infections and increases energy.
  • Citrulline, through its conversion into another amino acid (arginine) in our body optimizes blood flow. Arginine allows for increased production of nitric acid in the endothelium, to support circulatory function.
  • Without citrulline it is not possible to detoxify liver cells from ammonia, which is a waste product of oxidation process.
  • It helps maintain the acid-base balance in the body.
  • It plays an important role in the production of arginine, which stimulates the secretion of human growth hormone and prolactin. Arginine helps in bodybuilding, in enhancing blood flow and in relieving stress.
  • Citrulline promotes the production of insulin, creatine and the growth hormone.
Food source
  • Watermelon, especially the melon rind is an excellent source of citrulline. Vegetables like pumpkins, cucumbers, gourds and squashes are also good sources of citrulline.
  • Besides vegetables, fruits such as cantaloupes, honeydews, bittermelons and muskmelons also contain citrulline in substantial amounts.
  • Walnut seedlings are considered to be the richest source of citrulline.
  • Citrulline is also abundantly found in fish, meat, eggs, milk, and legumes.
  •  Foods rich in protein, also contain high amount of citrulline.

Glycine : The amino acid that is necessary for central nervous system function and a healthy prostate.

Glycine  is a sweet-tasting, non-essential amino acid that can be produced from serine and threonine, which means that it is manufactured  in the liver; it does not have to be obtained directly through the diet. Glycine was first isolated in 1820 from gelatin and is also found in good quantity in silk fibroin. Glycine is required to build protein in the body. It is required for the synthesis of nucleic acids, the construction of RNA as well as DNA and synthesis of bile acids and other amino acids in the body. Glycine is also found to be useful in assisting with the absorption of calcium in the body. It helps in retarding degeneration of muscles as it helps to supply extra creatine in the body. Glycine is important in the body’s manufacture of hormones responsible for a strong immune system.

Glycine is the simplest amino acid and is the only amino acid that is not optically active (it has no stereoisomers). This amino acid is essential for the biosynthesis of nucleic acids as well as of bile acids, porphyrins, creatine phosphate, and other amino acids. On a molar basis, glycine is the second most common amino acid found in proteins and enzymes being incorporated at the rate of 7.5 percent compared to the other amino acids. Glycine is also similar to gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamic acid in the ability to inhibit neurotransmitter signals in the central nervous system.

Only the L form of amino acids are constituents of protein. Glycine is an important part of GTF (glucose tolerance factor). The prostate gland produces fluid that contains glycine and researchers think that it may have a positive influence on normal prostate function.  It is present in considerable amounts in prostate fluid. Glycine may play a role in maintaining the health of the prostate, since a study of 45 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) found that 780 mg of glycine per day for two weeks and then 390 mg for the next two and a half months, taken in combination with equal amounts of the amino acids, alanine and glutamic acid, reduced symptoms of the condition. This effect has been reported by others. Glycine also enhances the activity of neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) in the brain that are involved in memory and cognition.

Function and Benefits of Glycine

  • Glycine is used by the nervous system and functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which makes it important to help prevent epileptic seizures
  • Glycine is also used in the treatment of manic depression and hyperactivity
  • Glycine also participates in the major energy producing biochemical processes in the body
  • This amino acid is also found to be produce in prostate fluid present in males so it is considered to be important for prostate normal functioning.
  • Glycine is the part of glutathione which is a coenzyme involved in many biochemical reactions. The important function of glutathione is that it helps in the maintenance of the cell integrity by protecting –SH group of hemoglobin, catalase and lipoproteins of the cell membrane. So glycine has an important antioxidant action.
  • Glycine is necessary for central nervous system function and a healthy prostate.

Deficiency Symptoms of Glycine

Few people are glycine deficient, in part because the body makes its own supply of the non-essential amino acids, and because it is abundant in food sources.

Rich Food Sources of Glycine

Glycine is mainly found in protein rich food.

  • Animal sources: Fish, dairy foods, meat, cheese etc
  • Plant sources: beans, soybean, spinach, pumpkin, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, burdock root, cucumber, kiwi , banana, etc
  • Glycine is a nonessential amino acid, which means that it is manufactured from other amino acids in the liver; it does not have to be obtained directly through the diet.
